Emma White, whose book on this theme was published in October 2016, presents an illustrated talk offering a fascinating insight into the shaping of our nation and exploring the extraordinary roles dogs have played in society. Step back in time and enjoy the thrill of Gladiators in action at Fishbourne Roman Palace. Re-enactment group Britannia depict the sorts of people found in the fighting arena such as soldiers who found themselves on the wrong side of mutinies, criminals or slaves, born to fight. They will be on hand to talk about their equipment and fighting tactics and there will be displays of gladiatorial contests in the formal Roman garden.

Formed in 1897 Chichester City Band is an award-winning brass band coming to Rustington for the first time and we hope to make this a regular fixture in our concert schedule. As part of the Arundel Festival Gallery trail, the Arundel Art Society will be holding a free exhibition of original paintings by members. Art Nouveau – an illustrated talk by Ian Gledhill (John de Bohun Room, Woodlands Centre, Woodlands Av)

Art Nouveau swept through the decorative arts and architecture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This new style often used sinuous, flowing lines based on plants, as seen in Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s furniture, Lalique’s glassware and the entrances to several Paris Metro stations. Ian Gledhill’s lively illustrated talk reveals the development of this distinct style. All are welcome - Heritage Association members £1, visitors £3 (pay at the door).

Worthing Advanced Motorists are running their very popular Better Driving Course in Worthing again this Autumn, with five consecutive Thursday evening presentations starting 28th September, plus a free observed drive in your own car. The cost for the whole course is £32, or £16 for drivers under 26 years, payable by cheque. Autumn Concert (Arundel Cathedral)

Arun Choral Society will be singing Vivaldi's Credo, Gloria and Magnificat. Vivaldi is best known for his Four Seasons work. We will also be singing Michael Haydn's Requiem in C Minor. Music is good for the brain, for reducing stress levels and the general feel good factor. Why not give it a try. Everyone loves the music from Morse and Endeavour, some and hear some of it live.

Peter Hill, former chairman of the Sussex Windmills Group, gives a light-hearted introduction to the windmills of Sussex. He will describe the three main types of windmill and explain how they work, with the help of models, before illustrating the windmills of each type that were built in Sussex, including the mills that once stood in this area. South Downs Film Makers – a presentation (John de Bohun Room, Woodlands Centre, Woodlands Av)

This Heritage Association meeting features a selection of films made by South Downs Film Makers, a locally based club with about 50 members, many of them with plenty of successful experience. They aim to make all genres of film, including dramas, comedies and documentaries, and several of the club’s productions have won awards in local, national and international amateur film festivals. All are welcome to attend – Heritage Association members £1, visitors £3 (pay at the door).
